Audiobook. Book #1 in the Daindreth's Assassin series.

Born to be a sorceress. Cursed to be an assassin. Chosen to be his empress.

Magic has two immutable rules—every spell requires a sacrifice and every curse can be broken.

Amira Brindonu is a sorceress turned assassin, bound in a curse that forces her to obey her father, even to the point of high treason. When he orders her to kill the future emperor, she fails, but discovers a secret that could bring the whole of the empire to its knees.

The archduke is stricken by a curse that could sentence him and his people to damnation, but Amira could be the only key to breaking it. In a desperate last-ditch effort, the archduke takes Amira prisoner and makes a pact to protect her from her curse if she will help free him of his own.

As time begins to run out, Amira soon learns that there are enemies that blades can’t touch and there are fates worse than death. Caught in a web of sorcery, intrigue, and her growing feelings for the archduke, the assassin must decide just how much she is willing to give to save the only man she’s ever loved.

Every curse can be broken, but can two cursed people save each other?

A fresh Fantasy Romance series that is sure to delight fans of Sarah J. Maas, Kristin Cashore, and Leigh Bardugo.

Healthy romance, super-fun epic fantasy

My new favorite author. Best romance I’ve read in ten years. A delightful fantasy romance story with a solid emotional core. Excellently written; the prose is beautiful without being overly dense or difficult. The slow-burn romance is built on mutual respect, hard-won trust, a solid friendship, and true equality, and there are no gross, toxic relationship tropes to be found. Well-researched in Medieval society. Super fun read. Possibly my favorite part is that even the villains are written as complex and human, and handled with surprising compassion.
I feel that I must mention, for the disabled readers in the audience, that the author has gone out of her way to create positive representation in the disabled character Thadred. That said, there are places where she missed the mark. She clearly did not have a sensitivity reader, and the c-word is used liberally, so heads up. It’s still better than most of what is out there, and the heart is in the right place, so I’m able to squint past the parts where it gets a bit off (it’s not easier to ride a horse than walk, much less joust all day, with a hip injury as bad as Thadred’s if he still has trouble with stairs and can’t run at all, sorry) and enjoy both the character and the rest of the book. I finished it in a day, which I haven’t done since high school. I then bought the whole series. Really, really fun read.
